In East Haven, Oct. 9, 2008, Joseph Jesse Bohannon went home to be with the Lord. Beloved husband of Ruth Flynn Bohannon of Mansfield Grove Rd., East Haven. Loving father of Deborah Minervini and Patricia Espinoza, both of East Haven, Joseph J. Bohannon Jr.,Scott( Sandy) Bohannon, Michael (Tina) Bohannon, Richard Bohannon, Mark Bohannon, all of New Haven, Patricia Gigola of West Haven, Frank (Myra) Flynn of FL, Barbara Celotto of Wallingford and Joan(John) Raccio of Madison. Also survived by nineteen grandchildren, twenty three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers Woodrow and Thomas Bohannon and sister Lizzie Mae Hunt and Nancy Bohannon. Born September 30, 1930 in Jacksonville, GA, son of the late Kella Hulett, he graduated high school in Georgia and served with the US Army during the Korean War and post WW2 occupation of Japan. While in the service he was the recipient of several commendations including the Korean Service Medal with five Bronze Stars, the Japan Occupation Medal and a Meritorius Unit Commendation. He was employed as a patrolman for the New Haven Police Dept. for several years and also worked for the CT Humane Society and then for the US Postal Service where he was the supervisor of the maintenance in the Bridgeport Post Office. Joseph was a member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), the Blinded Veterans Assoc. (BVA), a life member of the VFW Post # 2097, and the Irish American Community Center- New Haven Gaelic Football and Hurling Club. He will long be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday morning at 10:00 am in St. Therese Church, North Haven. Burial with military honors will follow in All Saints Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to ST. Judes Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.
