Obituary of Joseph Sobko

Please share a memory of Joseph to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Joseph Sobko, 90, a resident of New Haven for 50 years, entered into eternal life on Friday, March 7, 2014 at CT Hospice in Branford. He was born in Wijskie, Ukraine on November 9, 1923, a son of Anna Mynio and Teodor Sobko. He was an exemplar husband, father (Tatita) and grandfather (Dido). He leaves behind his beloved wife of 66 years, Anastasia Danylo; daughters: Maria, Natalia and Olga; grandchildren: Andrew, Liana, Aedan and Michael. His family, friends close and afar will remember him with love. He searched for his own siblings his whole life as they were lost in WWII. During his lifetime, he was an active member of St. Michael’s Church choir and Suma (Scouts). He was a talented artist and poet; writing poetry of his homeland, Ukraine, his childhood and other subjects. He played the Mandolin and sang. He also composed songs which enriched his family life. Other than his own songs, he loved singing Komar Ujenewcia (Ukrainian Folk) and Sodade Meu Bem Sodade (Brazil) songs. Joseph encouraged his children and grandchildren to pursue good education so they would have a better future. He himself was a self-taught electrical engineer. Before immigrating to the USA from Brazil, he worked for Techint Compania Tecnica International, Sao Paulo, S.P., Brazil. His accomplishments during his residence there were: electrical design of installations for petroleum industries, construction of hydro-electric projects, industrial plants and pipelines, transmission and generation of electric power, design of explosion proof installations and design of electrical machines. These projects were concentrated in the States of Bahia, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul . He retired from St. Raphael’s Hospital as a heating and cooling engineer. Our heartfelt gratitude to the nursing staff at Yale-New Haven Hospital Saint Raphael Campus and especially to the compassionate staff, physicians and volunteers at the CT Hospice in Branford. A Funeral Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Monday, March 10, 2014 at 10 AM in St. Michael’s Ukraine Catholic Church, 569 George Street, New Haven with Committal to follow at St. Lawrence Cemetery. Funeral services are in the care of Clancy Funeral Home, 43 Kirkham Ave., East Haven.
