Elwood “Babe” Cox, 86 of East Haven, passed away January 22, 2015 at home. He was born August 1, 1928 in Castleton, NY to William and Elizabeth (Peters) Cox. He is preceded in death by parents and siblings, Edwin Cox (Jean), Arnold Cox, Clayton Cox and Gertrude O’Connell (Thomas). Babe is survived by loving wife, Joan (Toohey) Cox and eight children; Patricia Cox of East Haven, Michael Cox of East Haven, Elaine Feagin (Willis) of Gardena, CA, Joan Lucas of East Haven, Ellen Clements (Robert) of Villas, NJ, Frances Arsenault (widow of Ricky Arsenault, 2014) of East Haven, Thomas Cox (Alicia Colon) of East Haven and Maureen Monaghan (Michael) of Guilford. Elwood is also survived by eight grandchildren; Bazin Girma, Enderyas Girma, Megan Harrison (Scott), Richard Lucas, Lauren Clements, Maggie Clements, Sean Monaghan, Kelsey Monaghan and two great grandchildren; Patrick and Bradley Harrison. Babe worked for Mobil Oil Corp. for 33 years. He was a member of the East Haven Stoner's Club and Knights of Columbus. He was an avid sportsman and played many sports during his high school years including playing on the winning Hill House Team that won the New England Basketball Championship. After High School he continued playing on many teams as well as for the farm team for the Philadelphia Phillies until being drafted into the Korean War. He was also honored in 1989 by being inducted to the New Haven Tap-Off Club Basketball Hall of Fame. Family will receive friends from 5 to 8 PM Sunday, January 25, 2015 at the Clancy Funeral Home, 43 Kirkham Ave., East Haven. Funeral procession will leave Clancy Funeral Home on Monday at 11:15 AM for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 in St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Committal to follow at St. Agnes Cemetery with military honors. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to CT Hospice, 100 Double Beach Rd., Branford CT 06405 in memory of Elwood “Babe” Cox.
