Obituary of Arne O. Helland

In Hamden, June 9,2011, Arne O. Helland, 97, of East Haven. Husband of the late Martha Nielsen Helland. Father of Arne C. Helland and wife Regina of New Haven and Nancy Strampach of Hamden. Grandfather of Arne Helland Jr., Gabriel Helland, Chris Helland, Mary Helland, Janie Diaz and husband Edward, Elizabeth Strampach and John Strampach. Great grandfather of Frankie Scalo, Gabriel Helland, Edward Diaz and Alex Diaz. Brother of the late August Helland, Marit Helland, Harold Helland and Alice Helland, Also survived by several nieces and nephews. Born June 28,1913 in New Haven a son of the late August and Marie Olsen Helland , he was a graduate of the Bordmann Trade School and served with the US Army during WWII in the 102nd infantry. Arne was employed as a carpenter for many years working out of the Carpenters Union Local #24. He was a member of Post # 89 American Legion in East Haven where he was for many years the post rifle instructor and had coached the state championship girls rifle team. He also was a champion pistol shooter. Funeral service will be held Monday morning at 10:00 in the Clancy Funeral Home, 43 Kirkham Ave., East Haven. Burial with military honors will follow in East Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call Monday morning from 8:30 until time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice. Arne's family would like to thank everyone at the Arden House, especially all of the nursing staff, hospice staff and CNA's who have touched Arne's life. A special thank you to Nancy, Danielle, Heidi, Alisa, Kathleen, Felicia, Jack, Richard, John, Mike, Ray, Lynn, and Larry for their patience and loving care. Your kindness has been a true blessing.
