Obituary of Audrey Smith

Audrey (Lyons) Smith, 88, of Branford, formerly of East Haven, was called to be with her Lord on August 2, 2013. Mrs. Smith was born on September 27, 1924 in Brooklyn, NY to Donald James Lyons, Sr. and Mary (Abernethy) Lyons Martino. Her family moved to Connecticut when she was two, and she spent most of her life in East Haven. Mrs. Smith was the wife of Robert Parry Smith, Jr., who predeceased her in death. Mrs. Smith leaves four children to cherish her memory, including Donald (Laura) Dempsey of Wallingford, CT, Audrey (Ray) Sundwall of Guilford, CT, Joanne (Glenn) McKnight of McColl, SC, and Suzanne Mathis of Gilbert, SC. She also leaves her grandchildren, whom she loved dearly and took great pride in. They include Christine (Jason) Lastomirsky; Megan, Timothy, David, and Jason Dempsey; Brandon and Lucas Sundwall; and Sarah and Ryan Mathis. She also loved her two great-grandsons, Nathan and Brian Lastomirsky. Mrs. Smith leaves a sister: Marjorie Lyons Jeffery of Clarks Summit, PA. She was predeceased by a brother, Donald James Lyons, Jr. and a sister, Mary Lyons Hildebrandt Day. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews whose birthdays she never forgot. Mrs. Smith was a loving and caring daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend. She was a member of Christ and the Epiphany Church in East Haven, where she served the Lord in many capacities throughout the years. She was also a prayerful member of the Order of the Daughter of the King. She loved to knit, and created intricate sweaters for her grandchildren and hundreds of caps for the newborn intensive care unit at YNHH. She was also a prolific letter writer, whose letters and cards the extended family looked forward to receiving. Family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 6 from 4 to 7 PM at the Clancy Funeral Home, 43 Kirkham Ave., East Haven. Funeral service will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 7, at 11:00 AM in Christ and the Epiphany Church, 39 Park Place, East Haven. Burial to follow at East Lawn Cemetery.
