George Schmidt (NHFD, ret.) 97, of East Haven, passed away peacefully at home on November 1, 2014. He was born September 30, 1917 in New Haven to John and Marian (Savage) Schmidt. He is preceded in death by his parents and wife, Grace (Rossiter) Schmidt .George was the last survivor of his immediate family. George is survived by two daughters, Cheryl Schmidt of East Haven, Candace “Candy” Giaimo (Mike) of East Haven and son, Charles “Chuck” Schmidt of East Haven.He is also survived by six grandchildren; Kevin Flanagan (Joey), Robert Giammatti, David Giammatti (Rebecca), Jeremy DeMayo, Michael DeMayo (Allison), Ashley Vidalis and seven great grandchildren; Leah, Ella, Luca, Lila, Tori, Max and Autumn. George was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and also a New Haven Fire Fighter with over 30 years of service. He enjoyed bowling at Circle Lanes, summers at Mansfield Grove and Sunday’s with family as it grew.
Family and friends are invited to meet and attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at 10:30 AM in St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 80 Taylor Ave., East Haven. Burial will be private. Funeral services are in the care of Clancy Funeral Home, East Haven. Donations may be made to Vitas, 199 Park Rd Extension, Suite 102, Middlebury, CT, 06762 in memory of George Schmidt.
