AmeliaTheodora Biatowas Hurlburt, 90, of New Haven passed away peacefully on December 10, 2014 at Apple Rehab Laurelwoods in East Haven. She was born July 16, 1924 in New Haven to Maximillian and Theodora Brzyminski Biatowas. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, of 59 years, Walter Joseph Hurlburt, grandson, Stepan David Hurlburt and five brothers, Edward, Matthew, Stanley, Thaddeus and Raymond. Amelia is survived by two loving children; son, David Walter Hurlburt (Daniele) of Milford, daughter, Laura J. Hurlburt Pacileo (Vincent III) of Ivoryton and two grandchildren; Vincent A. Pacileo IV and Christopher J. Pacileo. Amelia was a 1943 graduate of Commercial High School in New Haven and was a member of the Bowling Club and the Cap and Gown Committee. After graduation, Amelia worked at Acme Wire, Greist Manufacturing, and the WT Grant Company. She met Walter at a CYO Dance who called her a “rose among thorns” and the couple were married at St. Mary’s Church in 1951. They made a home on Allen Place in New Haven and with Amelia’s creativity and Walter’s ingenuity, they remodeled the home that was purchased in 1948. During retirement, Amelia became an active member of the community, putting her energy and enthusiasm into volunteering at the New Haven Colony Historical Society, The Hagaman Memorial Library in East Haven and the Cove Manor Garden Club. As a member of the Garden Club, Amelia developed a program called “Garden Therapy.” She met weekly with residents of the Cove Manor Convalescent Home and worked on container gardening and flower design. She received a Certificate of Achievement from the Federated Garden Clubs of America. As volunteers at the Black Rock Fort in New Haven, Amelia worked on weeding and planting flowers and Walter worked on building a walkway to welcome visitors to this historical New Haven landmark. In addition to her love of gardening, Amelia also enjoyed reading historical novels, taking photos of the family with her 35 mm camera, and listening to polkas and Strauss waltzes. Amelia will be remembered by friends and family who appreciated her warmth, wit and generous and loving nature. The family of Amelia Hurlburt would like to thank the staff, CNA’s, and nurses at Laurel Woods for their care and concern and kindness since 2013.
