Obituary of Walter J. Hurlburt

Walter Joseph Hurlburt, 94, of East Haven, passed peacefully Sept. 16,2010 at CT Hospice of Branford after a brief illness. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty nine years Amelia Biatowas Hurlburt, a son David Walter Hurlburt and his wife Daniele of Milford, a daughter Laura J. Hurlburt Pacileo and her husband Vincent A. Pacileo III of Ivoryton, two grandchildren, Vincent A. Pacileo IV and Christopher J. Pacileo, a sister Edith Moore of Southington, two brothers, John Hurlburt of Northford and Raymond Hurlburt of Wallingford and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers George Hurlburt and James Hurlburt and sisters Mildred Schlitter ,Cora Hurlburt and Gladys Hurlburt. Born Jan. 29,1916 in New Haven a son of the late Joseph and Amanda Remington Hurlburt, he was a graduate of Hillhouse High School, class of 1933. After high school he worked for a time at the High Standard Co. and then worked for twenty nine years at the United Illuminating Co. where he ran the turbines and machine shop until his retirement in 1980. After his retirement he kept active by working for SAGE and doing plumbing as a hobby. Walter met his wife Amelia in 1948 and they were married in 1951. With her ideas and his creative effort they remodeled their home purchased in 1948 .Walter was raised to the sublime 3rd degree as a Master Mason in 1948 at Adelphi-Momauguin Lodge # 63 and witnessed his son David's initiation at Hiram Lodge #1 in 1988. He enjoyed traveling, playing setback with his friends, collecting coins, using his metal detector and doing the daily Jumble Puzzle in the newspaper. Funeral service will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 in the Clancy Funeral Home, 43 Kirkham Ave., East Haven. Burial with Masonic Honors will follow in All Saints Cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 5 - 7 pm. Walter's family would like to thank the entire staff of the Ct. Hospice for the comfort and care given during his stay there. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to CT Hospice, 100 Double Beach Rd., Branford, CT 06405.
