Please share a memory of Bertha to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Bertha E. (Barnes) Mahoney 78, of New Haven passed away February 24, 2021 at CT Hospice in Branford. She was born January 14, 1943 in East Haven to George and Nettie (Clark) Barnes. Bertha is survived by her loving and devoted children; Noreen Virgulto (James) of Higganum, Jeffrey W. Mahoney of New Haven and William M. Mahoney Jr. (Jennifer) of Rockfall, CT along with five grandchildren she adored, James Virgulto (Rebecca), Kelsey Virgulto, Teagan E. Mahoney, Nadia B. Piascik and Mikayla A. Piascik. She is also survived by her siblings, Margaret Rose, Nancy Carafeno, Viola Burwell (Robert), Evelyn Halepis and William Barnes (Maggie). Bertha is preceded in death by her parents, husband, William M. Mahoney (1971, WWII Army Veteran and ret. EHPD), son, Dennis M. Mahoney (2009) and her siblings, George A. Barnes Jr., Shirley McHugh and Wayne Barnes. Bert, as she was known to her co-workers and friends, was employed by the City of New Haven as a Certified Tax Analyst until her retirement. Meme, the family nickname coined by her first Grandchild, Jimmy, was the perfect mother and grandmother. Kind, loving, generous, and always knew how to make you smile. Whether it was having sunrise coffee on the porch; watching the stars by the campfire; sleepovers; planning and cooking for holidays and family gatherings or teaching her grandchildren to do the grocery shopping, cook, bake, play video games, win at Poker and Setback; explore food options; sharing her Pocahontas birthday cake; or helping granddaughters to add “a little lace” to an outfit. She had a special and unique bond with everyone she touched. Meme enjoyed spending time with family, spreading love, and sharing laughs. We miss our family Matriarch dearly and are blessed to have spent family time together and have memories to cherish. “Meme, We Love You Way More.” Thank you to all of Meme’s care giving “Heros” that have taken special care of her over these last few months. Especially, Dr. Michael Imevbore (she worshipped you), Smillow Cancer Center of Guilford, Yale New Haven and St. Raphael’s Hospitals, Branford Hills Health Center, and CT Hospice of Branford. Memorial contributions may be sent to CT Hospice, 100 Double Beach Rd. Branford, CT 06405 or The Breast Center at Smillow Cancer Hospital. At the request of Bertha, all services are private and under the care of the Clancy-Palumbo Funeral Home (Clancy Funeral Home), 43 Kirkham Ave. East Haven CT.
