John G. Lipsett, Esq., 90 of New York City, passed away peacefully at home on March 11, 2024. He was born September 17, 1933 in Philadelphia, PA to John and Beatrice (Souder) Lipsett. John is survived by his son, Edward Lipsett (Elizabeth) of Madison CT along with one grandson, Nicholas Lipsett of Albany, NY. He is also survived by his sister, Ann Schiwall of PA and two nieces; Linda Schiwall and Susan Stroker. John is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Rosalie (Harrill) Lipsett, son, John G. Lipsett Jr. and his granddaughter, Amanda Nicole Lipsett. John grew up in Upper Darby, PA and after High school attended Swarthmore College (Phi Beta Kappa) -B.A. 55’, University of Strasbourg, France 55-56 (Fulbright grant)” Certificat D’Etudes Francaises Modernes” 56’, and Columbia University Law School LL.B. 59’. He was admitted to the New York bar in 1959 and had been a practicing attorney up until his passing. In 1970 he joined with Forsythe, Holbrook, Seward & Bovone and then with Patton, Eakins, Lipsett, Martin and Savage Law firm from 1991 to present when the two firms merged together. Throughout the years, he was involved in the Democratic Party in New York City, serving as Treasurer and President of the Riverside Democrats in the late 60’s and recently was also on the Board of Directors of the Morningside Heights Historic District Committee working to preserve the historic beauty and architecture in his local community. He was an outdoor enthusiast with a passion for hiking. He was a member of the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) which he had also served as chairman for a period, and the New York/New Jersey Trail Conference (NYNJTC). He had maintained a trail within Harriman State Park for 34 years in which he had led many hikes. On his bucket list was to visit all 50 states, which he almost achieved. He was also both an avid NY Yankees and NY Rangers fan. John loved history and art, visiting many museums throughout the city and the country. He was a generous and kind man, donating to many charities and organizations throughout his life. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. A Celebration of Life will be planned and held in New York City at a later date to honor the life and career of John Lipsett.
